The Philippine National Police(PNP)—Intelligence Group is entrusted with the mission: “To Conduct Police Intelligence and Counterintelligence Operation in Support to the PNP Mission.”[1] As to its mandate, the Intelligence Group is committed to performing its four(4) main functions.
One is the Production of Intelligence which involves the planning, directing, and supervising of the collection process of pertinent information and its subsequent conversion to useful information. This information shall then be disseminated to both the PNP operational units and the higher authorities as a tool for the decision and policy-making process.
Second is Counterintelligence, on the other hand, entails the planning, directing, and executing operations to protect the PNP against espionage, subversion of its personnel, and sabotage of key installations and facilities. It also encompasses the detection and investigation of acts of graft and corruption, criminality, treason, coup d’état, disaffection, sedition, or espionage within the PNP organization.
Third is Special Operations, which focuses on the conduct of neutralization measures against the organizational machinery and leading personalities of the various threat groups in the country.
Investigation and Legal Offensives, last but not the least, is the function that undertakes the collection of information and materials that can be accepted as court evidence in the prosecution of neutralized target personalities.
We cannot discount the fact that the intelligence groups play an important role in preventing terrorist attacks and other forms of political violence. By monitoring and analyzing information about potential terrorist threats, an intelligence group like the PNP-IG can help to identify individuals and organizations that pose a risk to national security and take the necessary steps to disrupt their activities.
