“Keep your people informed.” Leadership principle number 7.
Keeping your people informed is an important leadership principle because it allows for clear communication, transparency, and trust within the organization. When our subordinates are informed about what is happening within the station or the organization as a whole, they are better equipped to make decisions and understand how their work fits into the larger goals of the organization. In addition, when our subordinates feel that they are being kept in the loop, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated in their work. And this also applies to the community, wherein we must maintain an open line of communication for them to voice their concerns and for us to gather information for our work.
Media engagement by law enforcement units is now a must because it allows the law enforcement units to effectively communicate with the public, which in turn can help to build trust and credibility. As we, the law enforcement units, engage with the media in a transparent and timely manner, they can provide important information to the public such as details about ongoing investigations, crime prevention tips, and updates on community events. Moreover, media engagements can help to dispel rumors and misinformation and provide a forum for addressing community concerns.
Regular media engagement by law enforcement allows us to control the narrative and message about our actions, especially during high-profile incidents or highly-controversial issues. On our media engagement with “Talakayan sa isyung Pulis”, PMAJ ANTHONY CHINAYOG AYUNGO, Chief of Police of Solano Police Station, was interviewed and was able to explain better the information being relayed thereby minimizing the possibility of misinterpretation. By providing accurate, timely information to the media, we the law enforcement units can help to prevent speculation and misinformation from spreading, which in turn helps to maintain public order, trust, and confidence in the law enforcement units.
Media engagements also allow us to showcase our work and accomplishments, which can become a powerful tool for building community support and recruiting new officers. Media engagement can also become an effective crime prevention and deterrence tool. As young future public safety officers, we must not discount the importance of healthy media relations.
Rest confident that the police are making every effort to protect everyone's safety and well-being. We respect our relationship with the media and are grateful for your ongoing efforts to inform the public with accurate and timely information. We are dedicated to respecting the law, preserving the peace, and safeguarding our community, so rest assured. As a valued partner in public peace and order, we will continue to work closely with you to keep everyone informed and up to date.
