Police at Your Service

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

The concept of a "24/7 law enforcement duty" refers to the availability of law enforcement personnel to respond to calls for assistance and carry out their tasks. Typically, this means that police are always on call and must be prepared to respond to situations day or night. To keep communities safe and to assist the public in a timely and efficient manner, law enforcement personnel are on duty around-the-clock. As Police officers, who took the oath to serve and protect, the government and the people now control our time. The Philippine National Police's (PNP) capacity for aid appears to be boundless. The police are contacted when a fire starts. The police are contacted whenever there is domestic violence. The police are summoned when someone passes away. There seems to be no situation in which the police are not requested for help or assistance.

As my night duty starts on the evening of January 22, 2023, a Sunday evening and so I was expecting the night to be peaceful with no major incident to be reported. But I was wrong, our first case for the night was a suspected rape of a minor. A grade school student about to go home from school after being asked by her family to stop by the market to buy groceries for their evening meal. As she then hailed a tricycle to go home, the unexpected happened, she was taken advantage of by the tricycle driver as they pass through a dark secluded part of town. Our second case for the night is a robbery hold-up incident with a dramatic cat-and-mouse chase of the suspect around town. The two suspects were eventually caught and brought to the station where the 2 separate victims were waiting. Our third and last case for the night was domestic violence. The victim, still a minor, was hit in the face with her mobile phone by her live-in partner as they were drinking together with friends.

As police officers, we represent the PNP in every way. Every action we do, both on and off the job, has an impact on the organization we work for. We share some of the blame for the organization's triumphs and failures because we are a member of it. Being in the service requires us to uphold the organization's mission every day. For the mission of making the community a safer place to live, work, and conduct business we all have our different functions to perform.

We in the police service play a vital role in public service, dedicating our careers to protecting and serving our communities. Police officers are responsible for enforcing the law and maintaining order within their communities. We work to prevent crime and respond to emergencies, often putting ourselves in harm's way to protect the public. And we also work to create a safe and secure environment for all members of the community. And collaborate with community organizations, businesses, and government agencies to implement crime prevention strategies and promote public safety.

Building trust and relationships with the community, we police officers recognize the importance of building trust and positive relationships with the people we serve. They strive to create a positive and respectful environment, working to build strong connections with community members and foster open communication.

As police officers are often viewed as role models within their communities, providing leadership and guidance to young people and promoting positive values and behaviors. To provide satisfactory service to the people we are required to undergo continuous training and professional development to stay up-to-date with new developments in law enforcement and public safety. We must attend regular training programs to enhance our knowledge, skills, and abilities, and keep ourselves prepared for any new challenges that may arise.

As police officers, we can demonstrate our dedication to public service through our commitment to upholding the law, promoting public safety, building relationships with the community, providing support and assistance to those in need, serving as role models and leaders, and continuously developing our knowledge and skills. Our dedication to public service is a critical component in building safe, secure, and thriving communities.
